 Course Outline

Experiential Workshops:

These form the backbone of the course in providing students with an opportunity to express, explore and reflect on the Art Therapeutic Process directly. In large measure, theory will follow from the material shared in these groups. In this way students will learn theory that is directly based on experience. These workshops will be limited in size (maximum of 20 students) and facilitated by a qualified and experienced state registered art therapist. While it is stressed that the main emphasis of the groups is educational and not therapeutic, students should be prepared for a degree of self-exposure of sometimes difficult psychological and personal material.

Seminars and lectures:

The seminars and lectures introduce students to some of the ways the therapeutic potential of art is employed by experienced practitioners in a variety of health care settings. The seminars take the form of presentations of clinical work and opportunity for discussion.

Assessment:

Students will keep a Reflective Log of their experiences while on the course and will submit a 2.000 word essay summarizing their main learning points towards completion. The Reflective Log itself is not assessed for a variety of reasons but primarily because students will be encouraged to keep a record of their personal psychological journey, including photographs of images they have made in the experiential workshops. As such the Log itself will be a highly personal manuscript.

Successful completion of the course requires a minimum attendance of 80% and a satisfactory final essay. A certificate of attendance will be awarded. This will not automatically ensure a student's entry to the Roehampton University MA in Art Therapy Programme, however, we do encourage individuals considering applying for Professional Training to complete a Foundation Course.

The course is designed to provide an introduction to art therapy for those intending to train as Art Therapists or who wish to gain some experience of art therapy for their own personal or professional development

· A programme of experiential workshops led by the course facilitators and seminars given by visiting Art Therapists from a wide range of fields.

· One full-day Induction (weekend) and introductory workshop to begin the course to be held in January 2009, with weekly evening classes and another full Plenary Day to close in June  2009.

· Applications accepted between August and November

· Application deadline: Friday 28th November 2008

THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS HAS NOW PASSED AND ARE NO LONGER BEING RECEIVED. DETAILS OF THE NEXT FOUNDATION COURSE AND PROVISIONAL DATES WILL BE RELEASED EARLY 2009.
